An orphan Shobha (Meena Kumari) who's been brought up by her father's friend is of a marriageable age. While everyone tries to find her a suitable groom, she is abducted by Sunder (Pran), a man who desires to marry her. Eventually, she's rescued by an impressively good-natured and dignified man named Azad (Dilip Kumar). Her family is pleased with him, but things take a turn when they realise he is a bandit himself. Azad claims that he's the good dacoit who only steals from criminals. But will the family agree?
